Why Rush AGR?

Here are some often asked questions/answers...

Q:Top Ten Reason's I should Rush AGR at A-State
A:WE'RE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN! Yes, we swiped that from the Marines, but there's something we have in common: not everyone that wants in gets in. And everyone that gets in comes out a new man. Now, we don't have boot camp. Or angry drill sergeants. Or hand to hand combat training. Okay, so maybe we don't have that much in common. But you can count on this: when you are invited to join AGR, you know you're in good company, and you should know you're in for one heck of a ride. YOU WANT SOMETHING EXTRA FROM YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE? That's right. There is a lot more to college than studying and going to class. And we're not just talking about the social life. We're talking about the extra-curricular stuff – clubs, student organizations, sports, music, theater, philanthropies, student government, judging teams, you name it. Whatever your interest or inclination, you can probably find a club or activity on campus that's looking for someone just like you to join in. And you will likely discover that some of your AGR brothers have already joined. In fact, AGRs are leaders on campus, and we encourage our members to get involved. YOU WANT TO BE THE MAN THAT'S OUTSTANDING IN YOUR FIELD? Ok, maybe you don't have a field. Maybe you've never even stood in a field. But that's ok. Today's global agriculture industry is more diverse and sophisticated than our founders could have ever imagined, and AGR is well positioned to prepare you for a leadership role. We provide professional development opportunities to our members during and after college, including regional career seminars for undergraduates, internships through alumni contacts, job networking, and alumni associations with "post-graduate" agricultural programming. That's the benefit of being a member of a Social-PROFESSIONAL fraternity. YOU LIKE TO EAT? Yes, my friend, we're not talking about those cafeteria-style outfits on the other side of the row. No sir. The AGR house on campus is your home-away-from-home. So we're talking real home cooking. Big hearty meals with all the fixins'. After all, this is an agricultural fraternity —you can bet your biscuits and gravy that we know food. YOU ATTENDED A TRACTOR PULL AND SAID "MAN I WANNA DO THAT" Well, if you want to drive a big tractor that could probably be arranged. But don't worry. If you have no tractor-operating skills, and even if you have pledged to never climb into one (or back into one), AGR is still for you. Yes, our members include the "best of the best" from US production agriculture. But agriculture in the 21st century is very diverse, and our collegiate members are preparing for careers ranging from food science and biotechnology to agri-marketing, environmental science and many others. And while AGR has strong ties with 4-H and FFA, you certainly don't have to know the 4-H motto or be able to recite the FFA Creed to be a member of AGR (but it sure helps when you meet those 4-H and FFA girls). YOU DON'T TAKE SMACK FROM NOBODY! We're talking about hazing. It's that old-school right-of-passage thing that some other fraternities claim builds character. You won't find it at AGR. In fact, we've taken the lead among national fraternities in eliminating hazing, and we've replaced it with something called the Brotherhood Program. Here's the bottom line: AGR is a strong brotherhood because we select the best and then work together to build each other up. No tearing down. No weeding out. No smack. No bull. THERE IS MORE TO COLLEGE THAN AGR'S PARTIES! I know, you think we've put this one here just because your parents are reading. But it's true. It's called your "academic career," and we take it pretty seriously. First of all, we have a reputation to uphold and we're not going to let you drag it down. So expect your brothers to require study hours, to help you choose good professors and to provide tutoring so we can keep the house GPA up where it's supposed to be – at the top of the campus rankings. Second, we know that your academic success is a prerequisite for building a successful career, and we have a reputation of cranking out some pretty impressive alumni. YOU'D LIKE TO GIVE A LITTLE BACK? You wouldn't be here if someone had not invested in you. And it's likely you wouldn't be considering an organization like Alpha Gamma Rho if you have not already reinvested some of your time and talent in others. And if you're from a farm or ranch, well, then hard work and community service are in your blood. In AGR we believe that to become "better men" we must first learn to become better citizens and neighbors. Mentoring, campus leadership, community service activities, philanthropic projects. Our programs reflect our commitment. AFTER YOU GRADUATE, YOU NEED ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GET! Yes, my friend, there's a big hairy world out there, and it's just waiting for you to step out with your fresh diploma and fancy resume so it can pull you down and chew on your throat. Just kidding. But seriously, it's a competitive marketplace, even for a smart and talented guy like yourself. That's why you need AGR. It's a band of college brothers who will help you get connected plugged into all the right collegiate channels, and a corps of seasoned pros (we call them alumni) who can help you network before you even graduate. AGR alumni are entrepreneurs, captains of industry and a virtual "Who's Who" of the new global bio-ag industry. As an AGR brother you're in pretty good company. And we have a history of helping each other succeed.

Q:What kind of fraternity is Alpha Gamma Rho?
A:Alpha Gamma Rho isn't like other fraternities. In AGR you'll get the opportunity to experience both a social and a professional fraternity. AGR does what you expect a social fraternity to do: socialize with other students on campus and people in the community. AGR is also like other social fraternities in that it has a strong group of members and a house you can live in during your college years. But AGR is more than just one of those strictly social fraternities; it is also a professional fraternity. All members of AGR have related career interests. AGR is for young men pursuing any career related to the agriculture, food or fiber industries. One more difference: at AGR there's no pledging. You join as an equal member. AGR does a careful review of all potential members in advance, so there's no need for a "weeding out" process.

Q:What is the pledge process like?
A:There is no pledging in Alpha Gamma Rho! No smack. No bull. Alpha Gamma Rho is unique among fraternities. There is no hazing or pledging. We were one of the first fraternities to eliminate pledging and hazing. AGR has developed the Brotherhood Program to eliminate the possibility of hazing. It is an enlightened plan that will continue the tradition of leadership every Brother has come to expect from Alpha Gamma Rho
